DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CRITERION REFERENCED TEST and NORM REFERENCED TEST

Criterion Referenced Test

1. The main objective is to measure the effectiveness of a programme or instruction.

2. It provides specific information on individual levels of performance with respect to objectives.

 3. The score of an individual can be interpreted individually.

4. The purpose is not to classify and rank learners but to ensure development.

5. Test results are used to evaluate student performance relative to specific performance levels anticipated.

6. A test constructor is not concerned with developing a test  to maximise the variability of test scores.

7. Comparison with a fixed standard. eg: Driver's License.

8. It is used to measure mastery of a very specific objective when goal is to achieve set standard.

9. Student scores are given as a percent.

10.Used to assess small number of students.

11. Tests usually last a class period.

Limitations  a.) absolute standards are difficult to set in some areas.

b.) Standards tend to be arbitrary.

c.) Not appropriate comparison when others are valuable.

Norm Referenced Test

1. The main objective is to measure individual differences.

2. It aims to classify and grade learners in various categories.

3. The meaning of any particular score can be determined only by comparing it to other scores achieved by students taking the test.

4. It is often used for selection purposes.

5. Test results are used for making comparitive decisions regarding individuals.

6. It is specifically constructed to maximise the variability of test scores, as the purpose is discrimination of  individuals by comparison.

7. It is used to rank students based on test achievement.

8.Scores are given as a rank based on other students scores.

9.It assesses a very large number of students that are developed at a state or national level.

10. Tests usually take a longer period of time.

11. Limitations a.) No indication of prerequisite knowledge for more advanced material has been                                          mastered

b.) less appropriate for measuring affective and psychomotor objectives.

c.) encourages competition and comparison scores.
